About Ecuador

“Ecuador is a country that has inspired the greatest minds of all time to create important theories for the development of humanity.”
Ecuador is a small country located in the northwest of South America. It borders with Colombia to the north, with Peru to the south and east, and with the Pacific Ocean on the west.
It is influenced by Spanish colonialism, as well as by pre-Columbian indigenous cultures’ traditions. There are traces of life in this region dating up to 10,000 BC. The country was rediscovered and conquered by the Spaniards in 1532; period in which the Incan Empire was struggling due to wars between its leaders.
For almost 300 years it was ruled, from Peru at the beginning and later on from Colombia, by Spanish governors; who brought along their architecture, religion, and language. This period ended in 1822, when independence was reached after the Battle of Pichincha.
The mind behind the Independence was Simon Bolivar, who united Ecuador to Colombia, Panama and Venezuela, to form The Gran Colombia. This great nation only lasted for 8 years as local interests affected the union, and the Liberator’s dreams vanished. The wonderful Galapagos Islands became part of Ecuador in 1832.
